Football Results 2011

Napier 2011

The 1st XI delivered a fantastic feat of footballing achievement by coming 16th at the National Tournament in Napier.  This ranks the team as the 16th best in the country!
The Tournament started with an effervescent display against Tawa College – a school of some repute from Wellington.  Tawa had no answer to the Bounce-inspired, joga bonito boys from St Paul’s Collegiate and they were eventually beaten 7-1.  Waikato Ball showed his wizardry with the ball by scoring 4 goals and bamboozling the Tawa defences.  Elliot Collier, Jacob Robb and Connor Aldridge were the other scorers in this incredible start to the Tournament.
Next up were a formidable Marlborough Boys side and their physicality came to the fore and they won 2-0.
Tuesday meant the game against Lindisfarne would determine whether or not the team would finish in the top 2 in their group and therefore qualify for progress upwards to a higher final position.  The team weathered an early barrage of Lindisfarne offence and aggression before Dan Goodwin rose heroically to head home a corner.  Scott Hilliar made it 2-0 when he curled in a free-kick from outside the penalty box.
The next game on the Wednesday was THE game that would decide whether St Paul’s would play-off for positions 17-24 or find themselves in the privileged position of being in the top 16.  Tauranga lay in wait.  Earlier in the season they had pounded the St Paul’s brotherhood 5-1.  They were as a consequence of this, no doubt very optimistic about their prospect of progressing upward.
But, with the Bounce exploding in their feet, the Bounce brigade fought for every ball and refused to let Tauranga score, even at the risk of getting their head kicked in, which did indeed happen to Ayush Lakhera when his bravery prevented a certain goal.  The game, ending at 0-0 went to the inevitable penalty shoot-out.
After the St Paul’s penalty takers had stepped up and scored, it was left to Tournament MVP Angus Harris to pull off yet another save worthy of a Premier League Highlights Show and seal the game for the team.  This was a moment of incredible euphoria and delirium.  The top 16 now belonged to this remarkable bunch of joga bonito boys.  Their elation and ecstacy was the antitheses of Tauranga’s despair and dejection.

In the remaining games, St Paul’s were highly competitive and impressed all the spectators present with their energy and bounce-inspired play.

This young team, powered by the ‘Bounce’ did not just defy expectations they totally ignored them.   Ignited and activated by the Bounce they became EXTRAORDINARY.
ANGUS HARRIS – HEROIC
OLLIE TOMIC – ELECTRIFYING
DAN GOODWIN – INSPRIRING
PETER GRIERSON – MONSTROUS
AYUSH LAHKERA – DYNAMIC
JOHN PENYAS – AGGRESSIVE
SCOTT HILLIAR – AWESOME
JACOB ROBB – RELENTLESS
LANE FISHER – TENACIOUS
SCOTT FINLAYSON – POWERFUL
SEAN ROONEY – COMMITTED
JARED McCARTHY – FOCUSSED
ELLIOT COLLIER – MESMERIC
WAIKATO BALL – SUPERNATURAL
CONOR ALDRIGDE – SPIRITED
SAM ARMSTRONG – RHYTHMICAL

In the song ‘Bounce’ there is a line where Sam Hewat sings “higher and higher and higher and higher yeah!”  These boys in their conduct, their performance on the field and their eventual Top 16 place, showed they had not just heard these esoteric words, they had LISTENED TO THEM, FELT THEM and above all…………………..BELIEVED THEM!

St Paul’s 1st XI Soccer v’s St Peter’s

13 August,2011

The 1st XI produced a performance of monstrous proportions going down 2-1 to St Peter’s.  The strong St Peter’s team is a top 16 contender at the Nationals in Napier next week; this makes the result all the more noteworthy.
This was a redemptive result after a substantial earlier-in-the-season loss.
This was a magnificent and momentous team performance, with the extra efforts, energy, endeavor and effervescence that came as a result of the team’s Beach training Camp at Whangamata in the holidays very much in evidence.
Jacob Robb finished off a sublime piece of St Paul’s joga bonito “Bounce” where the ball, passed in a one-touch rhythm, from the feet of five St Paul’s footballers, before Jacob’s unerring finish.  This made the score 2-1.
Angus Harris was again heroic with some sensational one-on-one saves in the second half that kept the score line close.
On this day, the St Paul’s boys were not in the process of BECOMING extraordinary – THEY WERE EXTRAORDINARY.

St Paul’s 1st XI Girl’s Soccer v’s Forest View 1st XI

13 August, 2011

In this second to last match of the season, St Paul’s were up against the current division leaders Forest View, a premier side from 2010.
With the score tied up at 0-0 by half time, both sides had had their scoring opportunities and both sides had played superb defensively.
In the second half, the match was there for the taking by either side and so it was in the dying minutes of the match that Forest View scored.
St Paul’s can feel very proud of their performance.  This was their toughest match to date and they acquitted themselves superbly.
Player of the day goes to Phoebe Boyes for a very committed defensive performance for the entire match.

1st XI Soccer Report

6 August 2011

The 1st XI followed up their 2-0 mid-week win against HBHS 2nd XI with a 13-0 win against Fraser.
Despite the ease of the victory the team played with high levels of concentration and motivation and did not allow the lack of opposition to diminish their aspiration to play quality football.
Elliot Collier scored an electric double hat-trick, Ollie Tomic, Jacob Robb and Daniel Goodwin also dined on the feast of goals available.
These two wins show the extra training the boys have been doing is producing some extraordinary results.

St Paul’s Senior Gold vs Te Kuiti 1st XI

6 August 2011

St Paul’s Senior Gold played some of their best football this year against the Te Kuiti 1st XI.  The defence were working well and the attack was starting to find its target.  At the ¾ mark the scores were close with St Paul’s trailing Te Kuiti 4-3.  Unfortunately the teams fitness came lacked and as a result were unable to hold Te Kuiti back, letting in three easy goals to leave the final score 7-3.  The match was much closer than the final score suggests and the boys can be proud of an improved effort.

Result:    7-3 Loss

St Paul’s Girls 1st XI Soccer vs Matamata College Girls 1st XI

6 August 2011

Sitting second on the table and with only 3 championship matches left in the season, St Paul’s final home game for 2011 was always going to be a keenly contested match.  Previous matches against Matamata had resulted in a win and a loss so both sides were keen to win.
The first goal went to Matamata which was then equalized by Shani Fernando.  Matamata went ahead again in the second half but lapses in their concentration let Shani in again and in spite of repeated attacks at each others goals, the score remained 2 all, a fair result given the missed opportunities for both sides.

Player of the day was Shani Fernado for her efforts scoring 2 goals.

Girls 1st XI Soccer v’s Melville Girls 1st XI

9 July 2011

In a total reversal of the previous weekends performance, St Paul’s left Melville in no doubt that they meant business.  Taking awhile to settle into their game plan, St Paul’s were soon rewarded for their teamwork when Grace Gatenby scored twice before half time.
Not wanting to ease up on the pressure, St Paul’s stepped up the momentum in the second half with slick passing to see Grace score a hat-trick, Lauren Jakes scored twice and Shani Fernando finish off with her goal.  A stunning team effort.
Final score 6-0 to St Paul’s.  Player of the day was Grace Gatenby.
Well done girls!

St Paul’s 1st XI Soccer vs St John’s

2 July 2011

The 1st XI completed a comfortable win over a rugged and robust St John’s side.
John Penyas opened the scoring with a fine finish.  Elliot Collier added the second with a powerful drive from the edge of the penalty area.   Jacob Robb completed the scoring with a deft finish, where he ran onto a through-ball and lobbed the keeper from 12 metres out.
This was an assured performance with the difference in the two teams being St Paul’s quality passing and individual skill level.

St Paul's Colts A vs HBHS Colts A

2 July 2011

St Paul’s colts A played against Boys High Year 9 Colts A.
The boys were against  a team that had not even conceded a goal let alone lost a match all season.

St Paul’s knew they had to play well to win. But this seemed a unattainable goal when early into the game HBHS scored two quick and easy goals within the first 15 minutes.

But the boys stuck with it, and Josh Cave scored just before half time, leaving the score 2-1 at half time.

In the second half St Paul’s played extremely well and Josh Cave once again scored. With ten minutes to go, it was a nail biting match. But thanks to a bit of luck and some confusion in the HBHS defence, HBHS managed to give an own goal.

End result 3-2 to St Paul’s. Well done boys.

St Paul’s colts B played Otorohanga junior Boys.

2 July 2011

Otorohanga began strongly and scored early due to a defensive lapse.  The Boys were slow to responded to this early pressure and made another defensive mistake to be down 2-0.

However the St Paul’s Junior Bounce Brigade bounced back with Matthew Hill scoring the opening goal as the whistle blew for half time.

After a inspiring talk from Mr. Hogg, the Colts B team dominated much of the play in the second half. Unfortunately for us, Otorohanga scored again to go up 3-1.

The boys fought back and Pete Smit put in a brilliant cross to Jonathan Simpson who volleyed it into the net.

Final score 4-2 to Otorohanga

Player of the day: Tim Husband-Dravitzki

St Paul’s Colts B Football v Ototohanga Junior Boys

 21 May 2011

The St Paul’s Colts B played Otorohanga junior Boys at their home ground with a good number of St Paul’s parents making the trip.
The boys showed a great improvement  from last week.  Controlling the game through good pacing, and team work.
The first goal came from a break through the defensive line by Jonny who passed off to Riley to slot the ball past the keeper. The team dominated the rest of the first half but could not score.
Otorohanga came out stronger in the second half to level the game one all.
This spired the team into action, resulting in attack after attack. Followed by goals being scored by Jonathan Simpson (2) and Matthew Hill.
A great victory 4-1
Player of the day James Morritt for his outstanding work in defence.

St Paul’s 1st XI Soccer v Cambridge

June 11th, 2011

The 1st XI played Cambridge on Saturday and produced a sparkling first half performance that had the sizeable crowd voicing their appreciation of the team’s Barcelona – like style.

As is often the case in football, the chances created by this style of football were thwarted by a combination of the crossbar and the Cambridge goalkeeper.  Consequently, Cambridge led 1-0 at half-time having scored the only first half goal against the run of play.

In the second half Cambridge increased the pressure which disrupted the St Paul’s rhythm and game with constant fouls and messy play.  The St Paul’s boys countered this by stepping up their Bounce factor and equalised when Scott Hilliar drilled a 25 metre shot into the corner, following great St Paul’s Bounce and build-up play.  The team went close to scoring the winner however the game ended 1-1.

This was an eye-catching performance by the team, further portraying their unlimited potential.
The formidable Rotorua team will be confronted on Wednesday and 2.30pm.  They recently demolished HBHS 5-1.

Our boys will face a BIG challenge….but they have no fear!!

Because “Big” is a word that starts with “B” but our boys have their own, that also starts with “B”!

St Paul’s 1st XI Girls v Matamata College 1st XI Girls

 June 10, 2011

You had to be there! This was one of those remarkable occasions when a whole team took on the might of a team we have not beaten for years.

Final score was 2 – 0 to St Paul’s.  Goals were scored by Grace Gatenby and Jody Thompson.
The whole team played well.  Notable player was stand in goal keeper Phoebe Boyes, a stunning performance.

Outstanding contributor was Claire Sayer for her totally reliable defense for the entire match.

St Paul’s 1st XI Soccer v Hillcrest

May 28th, 2011

The 1st XI played their third game in seven days when they lined up against Hillcrest.  Not only were they confronting a committed opponent, but they were fighting the fatigue that flowed through some weary looking legs.

Due to these factors the score was 0-0 at half-time.

Hillcrest scored 20 minutes into the second half and the St Paul’s boys reacted with typically tenacity and team spirit.  They equalised when the effervescent John Penyas was fouled in the penalty box following a scintillating run.  Waikato Ball stepped up on the dance floor and slotted the ball into the corner to make it 1-1.

Hillcrest nearly scored in the final minute, but Captain Angus Harris saved the day.  Immediately after his crucial save, a corner was won at the other end.  In the goalmouth melee that followed the corner, Scott Hilliar set the seal on a fine personal performance by swiveling, shooting and scoring from ten metres.

What a moment!  The winner with ten seconds to go!  It showed the character of the team to rise above the results that had preceded this game, their fatigue and also being a goal down, to secure victory.

Clearly this team not only has BOUNCE they have BACKBONE!

St Paul’s Girls 1st XI Football v Melville High School Girls 1st XI

May 28th, 2011
This first match of the Championship round saw St Paul’s take control for the first half with plenty of scoring chances going wide.

With the score 0-0 at half time, Melville came back strongly to go ahead 1-0, but a superb pass from Grace Gatenby saw Shani Fernando equalize.

Final score 1-1.

Player of the day was Allie McMichael with superior support from the midfield.

Notable players were Livi Jackson, Grace Gatenby and Phoebe Boyes.

1st XI Soccer v Tauranga Boys High

26 May 2011

St Paul’s made one of the greatest and most inspirational comebacks in their long history when they lost 5-1 to Tauranga.
Tauranga were big, aggressive, fast and technically proficient.  The fact they play in a men’s competition instead of a schoolboy one, made them even more formidable.
Consequently, our team of youngsters found this adversary unstoppable and overwhelming in the first half.  Tauranga control defender was 6 foot 33 inches tall and stopping him at corners was nearly impossible.  Unsurprisingly against this monstrous opposition the Bounce brigade found themselves 5-0 down at half-time.
In the dark and desolate space that was half-time, the brothers went back to what everyone does when adversity arrives – WHAT THEY BELIEVE IN! WHAT THEY HAVE FAITH IN! WHAT MEANS MOST TO THEM!  And in that darkness the light of the BOUNCE shone and radiated over each blade of grass of that Tauranga field and it was no longer a field that was a DANCE FLOOR.  Tauranga did not score again.  Jacob Robb scored a fantastic team goal in the last 5 minutes that consummated the previous 35 minutes of sublime BOUNCE football.  The monsters of the first half had become minnows in the second half, outplayed by the Boys with the Bounce.
Mr Groom was later heard to comment that somewhat ironically this was his prudent moment as St Paul’s Collegiate 1st XI coach.
Every one of the boys and coach on that day in Tauranga learned on unequivocal truth, that
IN THE DARKENSS, THE LIGHT SHINES THE MOST BRIGHTLY!

St Paul’s 1st XI v St Peter’s 1st XI

21 May 2011

In a hard-fought encounter, the 1st XI went down 0-5 to St Peter’s.
With the loss of influential playmaker Elliot Collier after 10 minutes, the orchestra lost its conductor and it was hard for the team to find the BOUNCE as a consequence.
Up against a much older and much more physical opponent, the boys battled valiantly to the end.
There were many positives to take from the game.  Scott Finlayson made an outstanding debut in the 1st XI, signaling many years of presence in the team in the years to come.  Sam Masterton played almost the whole game, bouncing the ball brilliantly throughout.
The team heads to Tauranga tomorrow to face a formidable foe.  The Tauranga team plays in a men’s competition and will be big, physical and aggressive.   Nevertheless this extremely young team will take the BOUNCE with them…….and that means anything is possible!!!

St Paul’s Colts A Football v Fairfield College

21 May 2011

St Paul’s colts A had prepared well for game three of the grading round, the team approached the game not knowing what the opposition was going to be like.
The team had plenty of support from parents, and by half time were 7 nil up.
Throughout the game even though the team knew they had a clear win they kept playing as a team, and didn’t get lazy with the game or strategy. St Paul’s won the game convincingly full time score 12 Nil.
Most impressive goal scorer went to Mat Fielding who scored 4 goals and who normally plays goal keeper but an injury in last weeks game saw him play mid field this week.

21 May 2011

A second grading game in a row against tough opposition was made even more difficult by the unavailability of key players.  The first half ended 8-0 and although victory was out of the question the team pulled together for a much better second half.  The second half saw an improvement in defence and a few close shots on attack including a powerful long-range shot which hit the woodwork.
Final score was 14 – 0.
