St Paul’s 1st XV vs St John’s 1st XV

13 July 2011

Playing into the wind the 1st XV could not match the bigger and more enthusiastic St John’s side. The committed St John’s side executed their game plan from the start and St Paul’s struggled throughout to get into the game. By failing to make tackles and not controlling the game at any stage meant that St Paul’s were always on the back foot.  St John’s maintained their momentum to win the game convincingly and the Tricolor Trophy.

Final score 41-5 to St John’s

1st XV v’s HBHS 3rd XV

9 July 2011

Playing into the wind, St Paul’s played with good structure and worked well together. Controlling the ball in set pieces and put together some good phases to score three good tries. Josh Fawcett scored the first try after beating several players with his agility and pace. Aaron Crow and Izak Eksteen scored the next tries from counter attacking movements. Izak kicked well into the wind converting two of the three tries.

In the second half St Paul’s failed to utilise the wind conditions. HBHS played with great determination and pride to stop St Paul’s from scoring any more points. HBHS were rewarded with a good try after some constant pressure inside the St Paul’s 22m.  In the second half St Paul’s tried hard but lacked cohesion and direction in their game, this ultimately cost the team a valuable bonus point.

Final score 17-5 to St Paul’s.

Top performer was captain of the day Hamish Mahon.

This week the 1st XV face the challenges of St John’s on Wednesday and Cambridge HS on Saturday.

St Paul’s Collegiate School 2nd XV vs Te Kuiti

9 July 2011

St Paul’s started the game with great sustained pressure and whilst  made to defend early looked strong and put the first points on the board with a penalty goal slotted by Harry Larkman.  With ball in hand showed excellent structure and it wasn’t long before Aaron Cleland scored the first try which was nicely converted by Larkman.  Michael Loft was next to cross the line with great form and Larkman converted again leaving St Paul’s ahead 17-0 at the break.
St Paul’s were made to defend more in the second half but a well structured try involving Yui Yokoyama, Sam Tipping and taken across by Patrick Sauni, meant we needed to cross again to get a much needed bonus point.  A lapse let Te Kuiti in for a converted try but in the last few minutes of the game Laurie Meban scored leaving St Paul’s with a great 27-7 win.

Rugby U16’s v’s St Johns

9 July 2011

St Paul’s faced an uphill battle on Saturday with players out for injury and illness.  Also a number of boys played while feeling unwell.  Playing in to a strong wind in the first half St Paul’s forwards matched the larger St John’s pack and endeavored to keep the ball close.  This worked most of the time but three lapses in concentration allowed St John’s to score three tries through their back line.

The second half had St John’s back in their 22 but St Paul’s failed to make the most of these chances.  St John’s counter attacking was impressive and they scored 2 more tries through their backs. St Paul’s never gave up but were beaten by the better side on the day.

Final score 31-0 to St John’s.

Players of the day were Callum Brown, Logan Jakes and Taylor Hayes.

St Paul’s U14’s v’s HBHS

9 July 2011

Playing the top HBHS team in the grade was always going to be a battle. The boys going to Tihoi were playing their last game. HBHS scored the first try but the team hit back with Adam Ballantyne scoring off our “prong” move. Liam Jackson added the conversion.
It was 12-7 to HBHS at half time but St Paul’s was still in the game. HBHS, as in last year's final, played a clever kicking game both with and without the wind. The inability of the forwards to play a tight game up the middle punished us out wide.
The final score 24-7 to HBHS.
Player of the day was Tom Gordon. His numerous tackles around the bootlaces stopped HBHS in their tracks and saved tries.

St Paul's 2nd XV vs Taumarunui High School

2 July 2011

St Paul’s got off to a slow start and early mistakes allowed Taumarunui across the line within the first 7 minutes.  This was just the wake up call St Paul’s needed after the 2 hour journey.
Andrew Fullerton drove across scoring a powerful try in the corner10 minutes later.
Tackling errors and simple mistakes lead to Taumarunui’s second try but St Paul’s came back fighting crossing the line two more times before the first half was up.  The first try went to Kyle Dean and the second to Jayden Verryt leaving St Paul’s leading at the break 20-15.
In the second half the nature of the game changed significantly and with lack of reserves the team knew it would be tough.
Despite St Paul’s good defensive effort, the nature of the play left the team a little rattled and lead to Taumarunui scoring twice in the second half and sealing the deal with a penalty goal in the dying seconds.

Result: 28-20 to Taumarunui High School

St Paul’s U16 Vs HBHS U16

2 July 2011

St Paul’s began the game well, controlling the ball and providing good possession for the backs. Unfortunately a turnover proved costly with HBHS using this ball effectively to score and convert the try. Despite a long period on attack, St Paul’s failed to cross the opposition line and went to the break down 7-0.

In the second half, St Paul’s scored first through a strong forward drive which saw Callum Brown dive over in the corner. Again the ball was turned over allowing HBHS to capitalise on the teams mistakes to score and lead 12 –5. St Paul’s did not give up and with 5 minutes to go scored between the posts from another great forward drive which Taylor Hayes finished off.

The final score was 12-12.

Players of the day : Callum Brown, Hamish Burt, Rhodri MacKenzie.

St Paul’s U14 vs Cambridge

2 July 2011

St Paul’s got off to a typically poor start where the team faced an avalanche of penalties for not being on their feet. St Paul’s were down 12-5 at half time.

Fortunately the boys tightened up in the second half and the fresh legs of Andre Stokes, Cam Elliott, Lachlan Lee and William Fraser enlivened the team. Tries were scored by Shneil Singh, Adam Ballantyne, Tom Gordon, Wade Paniora, and Lachlan Lee. The last try typified the last 10 minutes and exemplified the game plan the team should have played from the start.

Final score 27-12 to St Paul’s.

St Paul’s U65 v Cambridge

2 July 2011

After last weekend’s cancellation, the team was keen to get back into it with a game against Cambridge High School.

After going down narrowly to Cambridge last time, the boys entered the game with some confidence and determination to record the first win of the season. Straight from the kick off, the boys were under pressure. In the 10th and 20th minutes, Cambridge crossed the line after some poor attempted tackles on their hard running centre.

At half time St Paul’s was 17-0 down.

In the second half the boys dug deep and the forwards in particular started to dominate. The boys were rewarded mid-way through the half when we scored after a series of pick and go drives. At this stage it looked like St Paul’s might have a chance to mount a serious comeback. It wasn't to be however and with 5 minutes to go Cambridge crossed our line again to make the final score 24-5.

The boys can be proud that they never gave in. Alex Gudsell and Toby Way both had strong games and Chris Fawcett produced his best game of the season with some accurate kicking and tough tackling.

St Paul’s Hedgehogs Black v St John’s

2 July 2011

Having heard that St John’s were a good team the boys  knew they  had a big game ahead them.  St Paul’s held them out nicely but they were attacking us in our 22.  St John’s got over with 2 soft tries through bad tackling.  With St Paul’s again defending after kick off, a poor pass from St John’s led to a great intercept from Ryan Van Straalen.  Unfortunately he was caught but good support from Dominic Belfield turned it into a recipe for try time.  The try was not converted however.
The score at half time was 21-5 to St John’s.
St John’s were too good though and led away at the end and claimed the win.
Final score was 83-5 to St John’s.

Great play from Ryan Van Straalen and Danny O’Hara.
