Following some sad staff farewells in 2017, the New Year brings with it some new faces to St Paul’s. We are excited to welcome – and in some cases welcome back – these people to our school community.

Reverend Peter Rickman (Chaplain)

Peter has 20 years of impressive and varied experience in the Anglican Church of New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the USA. He has worked as a community and youth worker, counsellor, teacher, prison and school chaplain, vicar and, prior to returning to St Paul’s, he was Dean of the Waikato Cathedral Church of St Peter. Peter was St Paul’s Chaplain from 2001 to 2004, before he returned to Parish Ministry in the United Kingdom. In his role as Waikato Cathedral Dean, he had extensive management and leadership experience, working with over 200 volunteers and 10 employees, assisting the homeless and mentally ill, providing outreach services programme for youth, the elderly and the vulnerable, while overseeing the Cathedral. Outside the church, as a first aid instructor, Peter has had experience as a community ambulance first responder, is an active leader in Hamilton Sea Scouts as an instructor in kayaking and sailing and is a qualified PADI scuba dive instructor.

Josh Hay (Director of Sports Development)

Josh has an extensive background in secondary school sport and education and is an able practitioner. Josh previously spent 13 years at Hamilton Boys’ High School holding a variety of positions including senior teacher, hostel master, First XV Coach, year level Dean and director of sport. He took a break to take on the role of Account Manager for The Lion Foundation, before being drawn back to the area he is immensely passionate about – secondary school sports and developing the whole student athlete. Josh has a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science (Coaching and Sport Psychology) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary). He has a strong coaching background in rugby, having coached teams such as New Zealand Secondary Schools, Waikato Development and Under 20 teams, as well as coaching experience in Japan and Wales. Josh’s position is to oversee the promotion and support of sporting opportunities that maximise the personal and collective growth and development of skills and opportunities of as many St Paul’s coaches and sports men and women as possible.

Angela Bromwich (Head of Department – Commerce)

Angela gained her Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Auckland and has considerable experience in curriculum development and assessment as an NZQA contractor, national moderator, panel leader for NCEA Accounting Level 1 and 2, digital assessment writer and materials developer. She has previously been the HOD of Commerce at Edgewater College, Auckland Diocesan School for Girls and has had leadership positions at the Correspondence School. Prior to joining St Paul’s, Angela was teaching at St Cuthbert’s College.

Bryan Summerfield (Leader of Curriculum – English/Languages)

Bryan switched to teaching after a 10-year career in retail and banking, joining Hamilton Boys’ High School as an English teacher. He has extensive pastoral care experience through supporting students at risk and being a Year 11 and Year 13 Dean. Up until 2017, Bryan was the staff representative on the Hamilton Boys’ Board of Trustees and he took a leadership role in the Hamilton Central Schools’ Community of Learning. Bryan has coached football and was the editor of the Hamilton Boys’ school magazine. Outside of school, he is a volunteer firefighter.

Carolyn Gibbs (Mathematics)

Carolyn has a Bachelor of Science from Massey University, with a major in Statistics, and more recently (2016) she gained her Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary) from the University of Waikato. Her teaching subjects are junior Mathematics and senior Mathematics with Statistics. She has also given private Maths tutoring to secondary school students up to Year 12. From November 2016 through to December 2017, Carolyn has been a teacher of Mathematics at Rototuna Junior High School.

Nicole Schollum (Science)

Nicole was educated at Aquinas College, where she was the Deputy Head Girl. In 2016, she completed a conjoint degree of a Bachelor of Teaching and Bachelor of Science, majoring in Biology and minoring in Earth Science at the University of Waikato. In 2017, Nicole had a LTR position at Tuakau College, where she taught Biology to Year 12 and Science to Years 8, 9 and 11. An able sportswoman, Nicole has the ability to coach basketball, volleyball, touch or netball.

Brad Emslie (English)

Brad gained his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Cape Town. He taught for two years in South Africa and then a further two years in Hong Kong. For the past four years, he has taught at Westlake Boys’ High School. At Westlake Boys’, Brad coached 1st XV rugby and managed the 1st XI cricket side. Brad has also had responsibility at Westlake Boys’ as a House Leader and in South Africa he had experience as a Boarding Housemaster. In 2017, Brad completed his Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Leadership. As well as his English teaching role at St Paul’s, Brad will take up the position of Assistant Housemaster for Clark House.

Daniel Teka (Commerce)

A Collegian (Sargood 2001-2005), Daniel completed his Bachelor in Business Analysis at the University of Waikato, after having spent some time working in banking services. An accomplished rugby player in his own right – NZU17, coached Fraser Tech premier side and assisted with Waikato U19 rep team – Daniel has a real interest in business studies. He has shown excellent rapport with our students as a Boarding House Tutor in both 2010 and 2016/17, and proved an impressive teacher trainee on placement at St Paul’s in 2017.

Melanie Simmons (Agribusiness Advisor)

Melanie has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Science and Technology and Secondary Teaching from Massey University. From 2008 through to 2017, Melanie held several positions within NZQA including a marker of Level 1 Ag/Hort, independent checker for Levels 1 and 2 Ag/Hort, materials developer and examiner for Level 1 Ag/Hort and agribusiness moderator for Levels 2 and 3. From 2005 through to 2017, Melanie worked at Fielding High School as a teacher of Sciences, the HOD for Horticulture and more recently, Director of Agribusiness. She was also the teacher in charge of equestrian and road cycling.
