Motocross riders place third at national event

More than 160 riders from 16 secondary schools turned up to compete in the annual Moto X in the Maize event, which was held during the last week of March.

Hosts of the motocross competition, St Paul’s Collegiate School, ranked third overall. With Waikuku College in second and Hamilton Boys High School in first.

St Paul’s had three podium finishes for the day with Joshua Voigt placing first in the beginners 125/250 class; Andrew Barr placing second in the competitive 250 class; and Benjamin Juby placing third in the aspiring 250 class.

The event entered its second year this year after huge success in 2014 and growing interested in motocross at the secondary school level.

Director of Extracurricular Activities at St Paul’s Collegiate School, Mr Peter Gilbert, said St Paul’s aims to have the event recognised as a national secondary schools fixture in 2016 by the New Zealand Secondary Schools Sports Council.

‘‘There currently isn’t a formally recognised event for Moto X, even though there are a high number of students competing in the sport at a national level,” Mr Gilbert said.

‘‘Our aim is to have Moto X in the Maize formalised as the official secondary school event for New Zealand secondary schools,’’ Gilbert said.

St Paul’s is also aiming for schools from the South Island to hear word of the event, travelling north for the 2016 competition.
