St Paul’s student excels in ICAS

On Tuesday 14 December 2010, Chang Zhai, his mother Jane and the HOD science Mr Kelvin Hogg attended the annual International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Medal Presentation Ceremony at the Aotea Centre in Auckland.

ICAS is controlled by University of New South Wales. Each year, millions of students from over 20 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, Pacific and the USA participate in ICAS assessments. ICAS medals are awarded to only the top student in each year level for the learning areas of Computer Skills, English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing.

Chang Zhai sat the Year 12 Science paper which challenges a student’s ability to interpret, predict, investigate, reason and problem solve. He achieved an astonishing 44 out of a possible 45. This was the highest mark in New Zealand.

Chang Zhai was the only student awarded a gold medal for Year 12 Science in New Zealand.
