St Paul’s Collegiate senior student Chris Whitley will visit one of the world’s leading physics laboratories in July, thanks to an award from the Royal Society.

Chris, 16, made an application to the Talented School Student Travel Award offered by the Ministry of Business and Innovation and administered by the Royal Society.

The award allows him to travel to Europe to visit CERN – the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, which operates the Large Hadron Colinder (LHC).

The 27km-long LHC is a huge particle accelerator and the most massive and sophisticated device yet built to allow scientist a better understanding of the elemental components of the universe.

Chris said the trip would give him a fantastic opportunity to visit LHC, see science in action and meet people from other cultures.

The year 13 student enjoys drama and music, plays piano and sings. But his strongest academic subjects are mathematics and chemistry.

He is considering a future in engineering.

Chris will leave for the three-week trip to Europe on July 22.
