Top football scholarship for 2014 graduate

20 March 2015

John Penyas, 2014 St Paul’s Collegiate graduate and University of Waikato Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship recipient, has been awarded a one-year full-fee scholarship to Berkshire Preparatory School in the United States valued at $75,000.

Michael Groom, former All White and St Paul’s Collegiate 1st XI football coach, says Berkshire has ranked as the number one prep school football in the United States for the past two years.

Mr Groom said Penyas was selected by the prep school because of his skills on the football field: "The foundation of John’s scholarship was his football prowess; he will be expected to play his part in the continued dominance of the Berkshire team."

"Berkshire recruit from all over the world, so John’s selection as the top recruit and the scale of the scholarship reflect the contribution he will be able to bring to the school both on and off the field."

Berkshire has an impressive stature in American soccer which encourages top universities to actively recruit from the school. The prep schools solid reputation with the worlds top universities will only open up more gate ways for Penyas in future years.

Penyas will leave in August to take up the scholarship.
