Jonathan Eyers selected to lead the tenor section

Year 12 student Jonathan Eyers has been chosen from a field of 265 applicants to be one of 64 students that make up the New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir. He is one of two students selected from the Waikato region and in addition he has been selected to lead the tenor section.

Commitment to this choir is for 18 months and will encompass training and local performances, culminating in participation in a prestigious international competition overseas in July 2012.

Criteria for selection looked at the range of voices required, the material that was going to be sung and the right combination of voices across the whole choir – to name a few.

Jonathan has been singing for seven years – four years as a member of the Southwell School commmunity under the tutelage of Francis Cowan where he sang in the Choir and participated in the annual School operas. While at Southwell Jonathan took leads in Titanic, played the Phantom in Phantom, Joseph in Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat and Bertie Wooster in By Jeeves. Jonathan was the School Dux in his last year at Southwell.

Jonathan is in his fourth year at St Paul’s and he has been under the tutelage of Francis Cowan and more recently Ian Campbell. He has performed solos with Hamilton Civic Choir and sung in the Brahms Requiem with this choir

Having to do two terms at Tihoi in Year 10 has meant that Jonathan’s first opportunity to take back lead roles in school productions came in 2010. He played Anthony in Sweeney Todd in 2010 and this year plays Joe Hardy in Damn Yankees.

Along with the School, parents Gayle and Bruce are proud of what Jonathan has achieved and wish him well for further success in his singing career.
