Ballantyne to take big shot at sports career

5 February 2016

Ryan Ballantyne is gearing up for another successful year in shot put. The New Zealand representative is set to compete at NZ’s only international shot put meet – The Big Shot – next Monday in Christchurch.

The competition will run alongside International Street Mile, which will host long distance, middle distance, cross country and decathlon events.

Some of New Zealand’s greatest athletes have confirmed their attendance. NZ throwers Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill will compete, as will top middle distance stars Nick Willis and Angie Petty.

Well-known international shot put stars will also make an appearance, including world champion Ryan Whiting and commonwealth gold medallist O’Dayne Richards.

Ballantyne is competing in the event after a string of successes in the past year that set him up for New Zealand selection. The Year 13 student ranked fifth in the world last year after breaking the Waikato 6.2kg record.

Ballantyne will compete in the elite men’s competition at 2.30pm.
