Cricket - 1st XI

20/20 Waikato Valley Competition

Date: Saturday, 11 October 2014

Playing top side Kaipaki in their first match, St Paul's got off to a bright start through Dillon Kelliher 24 and Kippa Fawcett 31. For the rest of the innings St Paul's struggled to find the boundary due to a heavy outfield and accurate bowling. Coach Mark Bailey made 20 not out as St Pauls reached 229 for 5. In reply Kaipaki were cruising 97 for 1, but some excellent bowling from Eli Spadoni with 3 for 23 from 4, Chris Swanson 1 for 10 from 3 and Alastair Blackett 1 for 11 from 2 got St Paul's right back in the game. However Kaipaki held their nerve to win the game with 6 balls to spare.

In the second game against Otorohanga St Pauls lost 2 wickets in the first over before Chris Swanson with an excellent 56 and Alastair Blackett 40 put on 79 runs to right the ship. Reuben Andrews played well for 15 not out as St Paul's made 127 for 5. In reply Otorohanga never really threatened and were bowled out for 73. All the bowlers bowled well with Cameron Wratt, Bede Higgens, Scott Spence and Alastair Blackett taking 2 wickets each.

St Paul's fielding steadily improved over the two days with better speed to the ball, cleaner catching and more accurate throws as the two days progressed.
