v Cambridge High School 1st XI

Date: Saturday, 20 June 2015 at 8.30am
Venue: St Paul's 1
Result: Won
Score: 3-2

The game last weekend against Cambridge 1st XI was our most important yet and the St Paul's lads fought hard for the full 90 minutes. Against a strong Cambridge side, we were as equals. The result of this match was to define who went through to nationals later in the year down in Nelson, either St Paul's or Cambridge were looking for that final spot. About 15 minutes into the first half, a sloppy goal came from some poor defending. However a red card to a Cambridge player was an advantage for St Pauls as Cambridge were a man down on the field. Even though we could not capitalise on this in the first half, we confidently went into the second half 1-0 down. An equaliser from Luke Goodwin saw St Pauls regain our spirits and another goal from Jin saw us up a goal with 10 minutes to go, Nelson in sight. A debatably offside goal from Cambridge saw us scrambling to come ahead, as a draw would see Cambridge go through on goal difference. A beautiful free kick from talented Zac Newdick saw the ball sail over the keeper and into the back of the net. Leaving the end result 3-2 to St Paul's and sights set on Nelson. A good game played by the entire team and thanks for the supporters who stayed to watch.
