Rugby - 1st XV

v Manurewa High School

Date: Saturday, 31 May 2014 at 12.00pm
Venue: Manurewa High School (A)
Result: Won
Score: 18-8

The 1st XV travelled to Manurewa High School on Saturday to wind up the Chiefs Cup competition.

Manurewa, who are a very large and physical side, started strong, applying pressure from a kick off error, and eventually scored the first try of the game. This was a wake-up call for St Paul’s, who then flicked the switch, and began to dominate, with quick ball at the ruck, fast lineout ball, and quick tap penalties, St Paul’s were able to put Manurewa on the back foot, leading to try’s to Alex Mitchell and Ben Brogden. A penalty to Tyrell Martin took the score to 13-8 at half time.

In the second half there was more of the same, with St Paul’s superior fitness, and higher tempo proving too much for Manurewa. Trent Collingwood scored a 3rd try for the team to close out the game 18-8.

Three wins from 4 games in the Chiefs Cup was a very strong performance from the 1st XV. Only point’s differential kept the team from competing for higher honors in the playoff round. The team heads to Hastings on Friday for the opening round of the Central North Island competition with a game against St John’s of Hastings.
