Opening homes and enriching lives

Opening homes and enriching lives

22 July 2025

When international student Chelsy Chai (Year 13, Harington) started at St Paul’s Collegiate School in Year 11, she became part of a new family.

Chelsy, a full-time day student from China, lives with Susan Erceg and her family. Her homestay journey has been an experience of a lifetime.

“What I like most is the warm atmosphere at home,” says Chelsy. “Every family member treats me as one of their own, taking care of me and making me feel welcome. I feel their kindness every day.”

For Susan, the experience has been just as rewarding. “Meal times are the best times,” she says. “Conversation can lead to joviality or in-depth subjects. Talking and listening on both sides has been excellently beneficial.”

Chelsy has enjoyed BBQs, weekend trips to the beach or park, swimming, dancing, and even card games with Susan’s granddaughter. “It’s brought a lot of joy to our home,” says Susan. “And Chelsy was so helpful when I needed to be with my unwell husband at the hospital – we were very grateful.”

Living in a homestay has helped Chelsy grow in independence, confidence, and adaptability. Her English skills have improved, and she’s gained a deeper understanding of different lifestyles. “I’ve learned so much,” she says. “And it’s been fun.”

While Chelsy lives with her homestay family full-time, Year 11 boarding student Mattes Schmidt, from Germany, enjoys the option of staying with a host family during exeat weekends and holidays.

“They’ve welcomed me into their home and I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere,” he says. “We cook together, watch movies, and talk about our cultures. It’s made my time in New Zealand feel complete.”

The International Department at St Paul’s is always looking for caring families who would like to offer a home-away-from-home to students like Chelsy and Mattes. Families can host full-time or offer short-term hospitality on exeat weekends and holidays.

Currently, a Year 11 boarding student from Japan – who is passionate about fishing – is hoping to find a homestay family who shares his interest in fishing for the August Exeat weekend.
