Rowing success at North Island champs

Rowing success at North Island champs

5 March 2018

It’s been a tough but very successful few days on the water for our rowing teams competing in the North Island Secondary School Rowing Championships.

Held at Lake Karapiro, the three-day regatta saw St Paul’s take away eight medals in total – one gold, three silver and four bronze.

St Paul’s had 53 rowers competing in this year’s competition. The rowers made it through to 12 A and two B finals – surpassing the efforts of last year’s event.

In the boys’ competition, the U17 and U16 eight crews both claimed bronze. The boys’ U16 and U17 four crews finished fourth place in their A finals.

In the girls’ competition, the U18 pair and U18 four claimed silver and in the prestigious U18 eight event, the girls secured another bronze medal. Another silver was taken by the girls’ U17 four and a bronze went to the U17 eight.

The big result of the regatta was the novice girls’ four who, despite being fourth qualifiers and 18 seconds off the top crew in the heats, completed the race of their season so far claiming gold from Hamilton Girls’ by two seconds.

The rowers now have a week of training and preparation before they head to Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel for the Maadi Cup.
