Sportsman of the Year title for inline hockey player

4 November 2014

Jacob Nelson, Year 11 student and inline hockey representative for New Zealand, was named Waikato Secondary School Sportsman of the Year for inline hockey at an awards ceremony held over the weekend.

Jacob was chosen from a pool of students from across the Waikato who also compete in the sport.

The Year 11 student was selected as a member of the New Zealand under-19 team that competed at the world championships in Toulouse, France.

Last year, in June, Jacob formed part of New Zealand’s 14-year-and-under team that competed in the Federation Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS) World Youth Cup.

In the future, he plans to transition to ice hockey and possibly play in America’s National Hockey League.

Cole Lucas, one of St Paul’s talented mountain bikers, was also awarded Sportsman of the Year at the same event for his ability in biking.
