Third in New Zealand squash

Lwamba Chileshe is on the up-and-up in the world of squash. The young athlete is now ranked third in New Zealand in the under-17 division after a stellar 2015 season.

Chileshe won the South Island Junior Age Group Championships, resulting in his third place seeding. Earlier in the year he placed fifth at the North Island Junior Age Groups and third at the National Junior Age Groups.

The 16-year-old also won the Waikato Secondary School individual and team events.

Chileshe says his highlight for the season wasn’t winning the Waikato and South Island competitions, it was beating other players.

“My highlight was definitely beating the New Zealand champ and also beating the second seed in the second round at the national competition,” Chileshe explained.

Chileshe ’s competitive spirit will see him on the world stage in the next few years, with the squash player eyeing the big time. He has his sights firmly set on the New Zealand Junior Worlds in 2016 and then it’s all onwards and upwards from there.

“My short term goal is to make it into the New Zealand junior team and then make the 2017 Youth Commonwealth Games in St Lucia and then the Men’s Commonwealth Games in 2022."
