Chess is held on a Tuesday during lunchtime and on a Friday after school.
During the year, there is a chess ladder for students who choose to be on it, as well as a Tuesday lunchtime tournament that keeps things very interesting.
In 2019, there is a professional chess coach who gives lessons to the chess club in the few weeks leading up to the competitions.
Competitions throughout the year that are enjoyed are:
- The Tauranga Boys' High Exchange, where six students are selected to play either in Tauranga or Hamilton.
- The Waikato Inter-School Chess Competition, held on a Sunday in August. One or two teams of four are entered and the winning team from the Waikato progresses to the National Inter-School Competition.
- The annual school Inter-House Chess Competition. This is always a fun morning where houses enter a team, each team must include a female from each house.
