St Paul’s Collegiate School has a number of positions each year for Gap Year Assistants. Our Gap Year Assistants are usually recruited from overseas (including from the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia), and must be aged at least 18 years old at the time of visa application submission. Assistants live and work in the boarding houses, assist with classes during the day, with student sports and cultural activities, and from time to time with special school events, and some of this work may fall during weekends.
Assistants are expected to arrive in time for the third term (ie late July) and work until the end of the following second term (ie mid-July). Occasionally, Gap Year Assistant positions may also become available at other times throughout the year. During term time, assistants must be committed to their duties as their first priority, but during holiday periods are able to remain in their accommodation, or travel locally or overseas.
Assistants are often school leavers taking a ‘gap’ year from their studies. However, we also accept university students, who may have completed their degree and want a ‘gap’ year experience before entering their chosen career or pursuing further study.
The position is deemed to be a voluntary assistant, for which there is a living allowance paid. In the context of St Paul’s Collegiate School, it is easier to divide the role into three parts: commitment to sport and extra curricular; providing support in the day school; and, duties in the boarding house. Assistants may also have the sought after opportunity to spend one school term undertaking your duties based at our Tihoi Venture School campus on the western side of Lake Taupo.
The role of Gap Year Assistant is a very rewarding one for those who fully immerse themselves in the life of the School. The more assistants give to their role, the more enjoyment and rewards they gain. Many assistants maintain a connection with the school and return to visit later in their lives.
