Football talent awarded 50k scholarship

5 November 2014

Football talent and Deputy Head Boy of St Paul’s, John Penyas, has been awarded a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship to attend the University of Waikato in 2015.

The 18-year-old plans to study a Bachelor of Graphic design, a three year undergraduate course at the world leading university, which can lead to varying design careers from becoming an advertising designer to a motion pictures designer.

While studying at the University of Waikato, John will be working towards securing a football scholarship to the United States to follow his dream of becoming a professional football player.

The talented football player is the youngest person to ever be selected for New Zealand’s mens futsal team, the Futsal Whites, and has played football for many Waikato representative levels.

John will find out early in 2015 if he has been accepted for the United States scholarship, in the meantime he is pleased to be starting a bachelor degree at his local university.

If John is awarded a football scholarship to the United States he will follow in the footsteps of many Old Collegians – including Chris Wood (Leicester City) – who have graduated from St Paul’s to become professional football players.
