St Paul’s sets new record with NZ Scholarship

11 February 2016

The New Zealand Scholarship results have just been released and St Paul’s Collegiate School students have set a new record for the School.

A total of 47 New Zealand Scholarship passes were awarded to St Paul’s students for the 2015 school year – an impressive feat for a school of only 690 students. Of the 47 scholarships awarded, eight were recognised with an ‘outstanding’ endorsement.

Deputy Headmaster (Academic) of St Paul’s Collegiate School, Peter Hampton, says New Zealand Scholarship is the most in-depth and complex examination for New Zealand secondary school students.

Roughly 3% of students who sat the exams this year were awarded a pass and less than .5% were awarded an outstanding endorsement.

“The complexity of New Zealand Scholarship examinations far outweighs NCEA Level 3 (Year 13). Students who gain a pass or an outstanding endorsement are considered to be the very top students in New Zealand,” Mr Hampton said.

Students who pass New Zealand Scholarship receive a monetary award which ranges, depending on their results, between $500 and $10,000 per year for the first three years of their undergraduate degree.

St Paul’s top achiever, 2015 graduate Hugo Brown, will receive the $10,000 per year award and, according to Mr Hampton, is likely to be one of the “top three students in New Zealand.”

The bright scholar passed eight New Zealand Scholarship exams, five of which were recognised with an outstanding endorsement.

This follows his success in the same examinations in 2014. Brown passed three New Zealand Scholarships, one with an outstanding endorsement, which awarded him $2000 per year for the first three years of his tertiary degree. He also completed NCEA Levels 2 and 3 with excellence endorsements in the same year.

From this success, Brown was awarded a $50,000 University of Auckland Scholarship where he plans to study an undergraduate degree in engineering this year.

Another top achiever for St Paul’s was Year 13 student Felicity Whale who passed four New Zealand Scholarship exams, one with an outstanding endorsement.

Whale’s results confirm her status as one of the top Year 12 students in New Zealand in 2014. She finished the school year with scores of 95% in NCEA Level 2 English and 100% in NCEA Level 2 Biology, Spanish, Chemistry, Physics and NCEA Level 3 Statistics.
