Robbie Crawford: Being creative in architecture

Being creative in his studies is one of the aspects of architecture that Robbie Crawford (Hamilton 2017-2021) enjoys most.

Now in the fifth and final year of his Master of Architecture, after completing a Bachelor of Architecture in 2024, Robbie sees clear parallels between his university studies and his time in the St Paul’s art rooms.

“There are two parts to studying architecture,” Robbie says. “There is the technical side, which involves construction drawings and detailing, but there is also the artistic side and the process work.”

It is the artistic side that Robbie finds particularly interesting.

“Putting together a board and collage for a project is very satisfying.”

Creating layouts that are both functional and visually appealing was also something Robbie enjoyed while studying art at St Paul’s. He recalls taking Printmaking in his final year with Mr Cameron and one other student. Through that class, he learned how to create a portfolio board with strong composition and presentation.

“The world of architecture is so digital now. Having knowledge of both Design and Visual Communication (DVC) and the arts is valuable.”

Robbie has also completed an internship with Edwards White, the architectural firm that designed The Hive, the new building at the heart of the School.

His next step after graduating at the end of the year is simple. “To hopefully get a job,” he says.

For anyone considering architecture, Robbie’s advice is straightforward. “Go for it. It’s such a cool degree, but you need to be super motivated.”

He says the hard work is worth it.

“It’s very satisfying to create something visual and be able to show it to someone as your work. It’s cool.”
