Violinist to play for New Zealand Secondary Schools Orchestra

23 March 2015

Emi Ng has been selected as a violinist for the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Symphony Orchestra (NZSSSO). The Year 11 student was one of 104 students selected for the orchestra, and one of only four students selected from the Hamilton area.

“For the audition we recorded ourselves playing a short solo piece and the various orchestral excerpts from the three pieces that have been selected for the 2015 workshop,” Emi Ng explained.

NZSSSO students, located across New Zealand, will meet in Christchurch from 12-17 April for an intense six-day workshop. The course runs from 9am to 5pm daily.

“We will work together on three pre-selected pieces, which will be performed at the end of the week at a public concert,” Ng said.

The pieces chosen for the 2015 workshop are: Festival Overture – Shostakovich; Cello Concerto – Elgar; and Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony.

Benjamin Northey, Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, has been selected as the conductor for the 2015 NZSSSO workshop and performance. He will coach students through the three pieces along with teachers from the Christchurch Itinerant Teachers of Music group.
