Hamilton schools dominate school boy hockey

5 June 2015

Hamilton schools continue to dominate school boy hockey, with St Paul’s Collegiate School taking the Bartholomew Cup from Hamilton Boys High School’s two year grip. The two schools’ 1st XI hockey teams battled it out on Wednesday 3 June for two trophies that were up for grabs:

  • the nationally respected Bartholomew Cup, which represents the best-of-the-best in school boy hockey; and
  • the Matthew Allen Trophy, an annual fixture played against the local rivals which honours former Hamilton Boys High School student Matthew Allen.

St Paul’s dominated the game with a 2-0 finish. Centre back Rueben Andrews scored the first goal, placing the team in a favorable position at half time (1-0). In the second half, Andrews scored again bringing the team to a 2-0 lead. HBHS fought back but St Paul’s goal keeper Simon Morbey denied the opposition any opportunity of scoring.

This is the second time that St Paul’s have knocked the national champions off their perch in 2015. First, St Paul’s coxed four won the Springbok Shield at Maadi Cup, depriving Hamilton Boys High of a fifteen year winning streak. Now, the nationally respected Bartholomew Cup has moved into the St Paul’s trophy cabinet.
