Tihoi outdoor and academic programmes

At Tihoi Venture School, students are offered a wide variety of outdoor pursuits to ensure each boy experiences both challenges and success while taking part in different activities.

The Tihoi programme offers four days of classroom education and three days of outdoor skills and challenges.

Outdoor activities that students experience are:

  • Kayaking – flat and moving water
  • Abseiling
  • Rock climbing
  • Tramping
  • Caving
  • Mountaineering
  • Firearms and range shooting
  • A survival exercise
  • A six-hour and 44-hour solo
  • An extended six-day expedition of outdoor pursuit of his choice.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Students are encouraged to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. The objectives and benefits of the scheme ties in with the philosophy of St Paul’s and the Tihoi programme.

Academic programme

Tihoi Venture School operates a seven-day weekly programme where four days are spent in academic studies and the remaining days are spent learning outdoor skills and challenges.

The academic programme is based on a mix of classroom and experiential learning styles, as students are given the opportunity to learn from the environment they live in. Academic standards are maintained in all subjects and technology is fully utilised in the teaching programme.

Students study the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Te Takanga o te Waa (Social Studies), Outdoor Education, Physical Education and Hauora/Wellbeing are also taught during the normal school day.

On academic days after dinner, the boys return to their classrooms for supervised journaling time.
